One of the skills I noticed the students have trouble with is the ability to ask for help or ask questions when they’re lost. As someone who practices this often I presented this question to my mentor Mr Shulman about if there was something to be done but as expected it’s not something you can just teach in a lesson or two. My current approach on the issue now is to just demonstrate self advocacy as well as provide a space to where the students feel comfortable asking me questions as well.
Starting of my second week in my internship at HTe and I am so happy about it. This week the students have their SLC’s after school (student led conferences) so I’ve been dedicating a large portion of my time to helping them prepare slideshows for presenting their work to their parents. A lot of students are feeling stressed about it, others not so much so the progress throughout the class is scattered. But after spending a whole week with the students I realize how much fun it is to work with them, even when they get off task, which happens very often. In terms of my goal, I feel like they’ll be at a spot where they’ll be confident in their math skills by the end of the year.
As of today, I have been in the classroom environment for two days now and I can tell a lot about the work space already. The biggest thing I have noticed in these past couple of days are the students obviously, what they're like and a general feel for the classroom . I'm starting to notice who hangs out with who and how certain people interact with each other as well as how the 5th graders act as a whole. I feel like I've been able to adjust to the environment pretty fast and am happy to work with these guys for next few weeks.
Only a few days away until my externship starts and I'm very excited. In a few days I will be working with My Shulman, my past teacher, with 5th graders at High Tech Elementary (HTe). I've never had prior experience working with kids so this is gonna be an entirely new aspect of my life.
